Last week Korea’s president, Park Geun-hye, came to visit; coming along was also a new round of the China-South Korea cultural exchange. And in the past week, from Shanghai to Beijing, from the Charity Football Match to the China-South Korea friendship concert, a Chinese boy became the focus. That boy is Lu Han.
Lu Han, who was born in Beijing on the 20th of April 1990, went to Korea in 2008 to study after completing his student days in the Haidian district. Two years later he signed to become a trainee with the famous Korean entertainment company who once created H.O.T and Super Junior — Star Museum (abbreviated as S.M.). In April 2012, Lu Han debuted officially as a member of EXO-M.
At the end of June 2013, EXO-M were invited as guest performers to the Shanghai Asian Dream Cup Match (Shanghai ex-star team vs Park Jisung and friends team). Yet on the day of the match (23rd June), Lu Han actually played in the match as a representative of the ex-stars team; his performance was approved by seniors within the team. However it is inevitable that, towards the boy who is an idol and thus only a nonprofessional player, there will be some comments regarding Lu Han with relativity and limitations. This article aims to use a few paragraphs to restore this Chinese boy and football’s affinity.

Two weeks ago, his influence may have only been exerted within the entertainment industry. However, following the Asian Dream Cup Charity Match, this boy, who was given a thumbs up by Fan Zhiyi, has since caught the attention of many football fans. He is Lu Han, who grew up in Beijing, debuted in Korea, and this is the affinity between football and him.
Commentary on Football Player Lu
21: During the Asian Dream Cup Charity Match with the Shanghai ex-stars team vs Park Ji Sung and friends team, Lu Han joined the game on the 40th minute of the first half (substituting #6 Li Ming), appearing for a total of 21 minutes in the game.
2: During this game, Lu Han was involved in both times that the Shanghai ex-Stars team had exceptionally good chances: the first being on the 41st minute of the first half where after he received the ball from a team member he took a shot for the goal, but his right foot kick was blocked by the goalkeeper; the other time was the 51st minute, wherein Lu Han stopped the ball midfield and then passed it onto a space on the right. Shen Han then came in from the back row, receiving the ball and taking it to the scoring zone, however he made a mistake and it came to an end.
29&41: At first, Lu Han’s name was not actually in the official list of 26 team names for the Shanghai Old-Stars team. However Lu Han, who was well-liked and won the hearts of the senior footballers in his team, was able to play during both the first and second half of the game as #29 and #41 respectively.
Fan Zhiyi: “Inviting Lu Han this time was right. Many people say that idols are unable to do sports – this is a misunderstanding, look at how well he plays!”
Shen Han: “Lu Han has a great speed, he’s probably about the same as I was when I was young!”
Pro Evolution Football
Lu Han used to dream about becoming a football player; he was charmed by everything surrounding the sport. Just like many people his age, not only did he play football, but he also loved to play football video games, his favourite being Pro Evolution Football. In the past, his game controller once was his main platform to play Pro Evolution Football. Also, it was very normal for his friends and he to play during their spare time after school. Of course, “Red Devils” Manchester United was his main team in the game.
Manchester United
Lu Han is Manchester United’s loyal fan; the “Red Devils”’ tradition of the number 7 also allowed this number to become his favourite. Whether it’s when he was a student or after he debuted, his attention to the “Red Devils” has never changed. Once, he often ran on the school field in his Manchester United jersey; now, Hernandez, Ferguson and Van Persie have all become his weibo profile picture one by one — during the third round of the English Premier League in the 2012-13 season, Manchester United relied on a penalty kick by Van Persie and won. Not long after the match finished, Lu Han changed his weibo profile picture to a photo of Van Perise celebrating with his arms in the air.
Fans were obviously aware of Lu Han’s love for Manchester United. They not only designed their logo based on the “Red Devils” emblem, but also prepared a huge gift for Lu Han this year for his 23rd birthday. After the fans assembled all their ideas, and after mobilising all their forces, a Manchester United jersey with the Premier League emblem was created, printed with the name “Lu Han #23” and with Ferguson, Ferdinand, Giggs, Vladimir and so on’s signatures from the 2012-13 match season.
Champion
Lu Han’s dominant foot is his right; using the front and the inside of his foot to shoot is his “weapon”. A day many years ago, whilst wearing shoes, Lu Han (who wasn’t originally planning to play) saw a few friends playing football, and was suddenly seized by a whim, deciding to join the game. Afterwards, he took off his shoes, and started to practice free kicks “barefoot” on the artificial grass — practicing until dark.
During his student days, Lu Han regularly joined the football crowd every day after school. The physical education teachers also really loved Lu Han, who had excellent skills. He had a great speed, and his coordination was great too; this may have been to do with his past participation in the Youth American Flag Football games. What’s worth mentioning is that Lu Han had also once helped his year’s team win the football championship. That was a time where his year played as a unit in the competition – the team Lu Han was on overthrew everyone. Finally, during penalty shoot in the finals (with the score being 2-2) they defeated their opponents, obtaining first place. And Lu Han in total scored 4 goals in that game thus becoming the most valued contributing player.
