130813 Asia Today: “EXO crowned ‘Trending Idols’ “We’re so busy we can’t sleep, but we’re so happy””

AsiaToday’s Jung Jihee Reporter = It is an undisputed fact that EXO became the ‘Trending Idols’.

EXO-K (Suho Kai D.O Chanyeol Sehun Baekhyun),promoting in Korea, and EXO-M (Kris Luhan Tao Chen Lay Xiumin), promoting in China, officially débuted last year in April with their first mini album ‘MAMA’.

Back then, EXO became a hot topic due to the fact that they are part of SM Entertainment, along with DBSK, Super Junior, Shinee, and other groups. Although they became a hot topic, they didn’t get as much response as they expected.

But in only one year, EXO showed eye-catching growth that was hard to believe. Over 400,000 copies of their first studio album ‘XOXO Kiss & Hug’, released in June, were sold in just one month and it dominated the Asian music charts. EXO won 1st many times on different music programs with their title track ‘Wolf’. Soon after, their first repackaged album was released, in August, and contained ‘Growl’, as well two other songs that all ranked high on various music charts.

"Honestly, we didn’t think the response would be this good, so we’re really happy and a little bewildered. We thank everyone because not only our regular fans but other people liked our songs this time. I think there’s a synergic effect, because we promoted with all twelve members instead of split into two groups. I felt that EXO shines more when we become one."

читать дальше'Growl' is an urban R&B sound based dance track. The lyrics display the heart of a boy who refuses to lose the girl he loves as 'Growl'.

EXO members explained that ‘Growl’ captured everyone’s interest because it is original, humorous and different, unlike ‘Wolf’, which received both likes and dislikes.

"If ‘Wolf’ was a song with lyrics full of wit and a musical-like performance, showing EXO’s unique charm, ‘Growl’ is a song to show the perfect and great EXO. Within calmness, you can feel the sexiness. (laughs) Although other songs did the same, I remember that we recorded this song in an especially fun atmosphere. It’s also a song that we ourselves can enjoy when we perform on stage. I think it can be seen that we enjoy performing ‘Growl’ through our expressions on stage."

'Growl' received attention because it only took a single take to film the unique music video. In some sort of storage/industrial space, the twelve members were in two groups, showing a performance of fighting over the camera angle, then coming together as one.

"The biggest highlight of this music video is that each member pulled the camera to make the angle turn. It felt like we were dancing with the camera. Each scene of dancing, then taking your hat off and putting it on a different member, or another member stealing a hat from a different member, contributed to the fun in the music video. Although there were accidents of dropping the hat in the middle, on-screen that came out pretty great. (laughs) Soon other versions of music videos will be released."

When asked if they felt overwhelmed from the extreme amount of attention they received, even though it’s only been a year and a half since they débuted, and whether they get tired from the busy schedules, EXO members replied energetically that “they weren’t(didn’t) at all”.

"There’s still a long way to go; we can’t be tired yet. Actually, during our trainee days, we saw other groups that didn’t sleep and still completed their schedule, and we didn’t know if we would be able to do that. But after receiving so much love, each and every day is happy and fun, even though we’re busy and tired every day. No matter how exhausted we are, when we get on stage, suddenly we have strength and we get hyped. We only think about how we must present a stage that isn’t looked down upon even when compared artists worldwide."

Although on stage EXO members are always serious and shows us a dedicated performance, throughout the interview, the twelve members were laughing and chatting, so they left a first impression of being fun and silly boys.

I thought that whenever they have a schedule, they have to move with many members, so it would be chaotic and with that, many fun things would happen.

"There are almost 30 people that move together if we count our managers, stylists, and other staffs. So, sometimes, we accidentally leave one or two members behind. In the music program waiting rooms, some members need to sit out in the hall. But because we were always together since we were trainees, we have the most fun when we’re all together. Sometimes members fight but we don’t keep it in and we figure it all out when it happens so our friendship becomes even stronger. There’s probably no other group with as good a teamwork as our group. (laughs)"

They have come a long way with their growth, but the members admit that they still have a long way to go. Because of that, they have the ability to go to a higher level.

The members believe in their ability and they set their goals and plans for the future.

"Because we worked really hard this year, promoting, we wish to receive some type of reward for it. Our goal is to have our own concert next year and a world tour the year after. Then, after that, our goal is to become ‘Korea’s and China’s Icon’, representing Asia. We’re going to become a team that has no flaws and the world recognizes. Please watch us as we complete and reach our goals."

Apparently, taking over Hanteo's Daily and Real-time charts wasn't enough for EXO, because now they've also taken over the Weekly charts!

The boys previously brought in immense sales with their 'XOXO' physical album, and their repackaged version of the new album, which includes three new songs including "Growl", is also on its way to break records. The repackaged version (both Kiss and Hug versions) are still at the top of Daily and Real-Time, and has now kicked up to #1 on Weekly as well. Breaking their own Hanteo record, with 118,791 copies sold in the first week, reportedly the repackaged album sales outpaced the original 'XOXO' album which sold 118,598 copies in the first week.
