SM Accused of Plagiarising Graphics in Recent EXO Teaser Video

SM Entertainment is being accused of plagiarizing EXO’s recent teaser video after a Swedish graphic designer noted that they have used graphics by him and two other graphic designers without permission.

Graphic designer Erik Söderberg recently shared a post, which was originally started by the user orisonofkyungsoo on December 5, that points out the similarities on his Tumblr. The post shows a comparison between graphic art by Erik Söderberg and two other international designers – Carlo Vega and Alexander Nusic – and graphics that appear on EXO’s teaser video titled “EXO 2015 COMING SOON.” The teaser video first aired during the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards on December 3, and was uploaded on YouTube soon after the live broadcast.

SM on EXO’s Teaser: “It Is Absolutely Not Plagiarism”

читать дальшеWhile EXO is under fire for possible plagiarism for its teaser video, VM Production, the company that produced the video, has stated, “It is absolutely not plagiarism.”

VM production said on January 14 to local news source OSEN, “We paid for the material in question and got permission to use it from the graphic artists, and it is definitely not plagiarism.” They then made an update on the issue, saying, “We have contacted the artists and have taken appropriate action. The video can now be streamed normally on YouTube.”

SM Entertainment itself had also made a statement earlier, saying, “EXO’s comeback teaser video was made professionally to be revealed on December 3 of last year during the ‘MAMA‘ award ceremonies. We have asked VM Production, who made the video, to quickly resolve the issue, and we will try to make the EXO comeback teaser video be available normally.”

They added, “It’s too bad that this happened over a month into the video being released,” and that “As for the current case of illegally writing and distributing content that was not confirmed, we will be looking into legal action.”

This comes in response to a claim made by Swedish designer Erik Söderberg, who stated on his blog, “Please be aware that some of the motion graphics art pieces in the video ‘EXO 2015 COMING SOON’ were used without permission from the original artists.” The video was taken down in response to the plagiarism claim for some time afterwards. However, it is now back up and available or viewing.

VM Production, the production company that created the teaser video, revealed to OSEN on January 14 that the teaser video was not plagiarized, and they had prior contact and even paid the graphic designer before using his work. They said, "We paid and received permission from the graphic designer; that isn't plagiarism. We are confused that this happened and we are currently contacting the graphic designer."

A representative of SM Entertainment also revealed to OSEN, "The EXO comeback teaser was created to be shown at the '2014 MAMA' on December 3, 2014. We requested that VM Production take action regarding the matter and we will work to have EXO's comeback teaser accessible again."

Since then, Seo Dong Hyuk, a fellow graphic designer who created EXO's teaser video, was revealed to have gotten in contact with Erik Soderberg and resolved the issue. Erik Soderberg updated his Twitter stating that the teaser video is back up and running. It seems the issue had been that Erik Soderberg had given VM Production permission to use his work, but he had not realized what they were using it for, leading to the confusion.

EXO Wins Most Popular International Group Award at China’s ‘Huading Awards’

By promoting the second mini album Overdose in Korea and China in 2014, EXO won four awards at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards, including Best Male Group, Best Asian Style, UnionPay Album of the Year and UnionPay Artist of the Year awards.

The group also won Asia Best Popular Group award and Best Performance award from The 8th Miguhui Awards.

EXO-M’s Chen and Lay, who attended the ceremony on this day representing EXO, said in Chinese, “We’re honored and thankful to receive such a big award. We will work hard to become EXO that deserves the Most Popular International Group award. We will return with greater performances in 2015.”

Chen also presented a sentimental stage singing Breath along with Zhang Li-Yin, captivating the audience members at the ceremony.

SM Announces Premiere Date for World’s First Hologram Musical “School OZ” Starring EXO’s Suho, Xiumin, TVXQ’s Changmin, and Others

SM Entertainment has announced the premiere date for its hologram musical, “School OZ,” starring EXO‘s Suho and Xiumin, TVXQ‘s Changmin, f(x)‘s Luna, Red Velvet‘s Seulgi, and SHINee‘s Key.

The first screening is set to take place on January 14 at the SMTOWN Theatre, located in SM’s multicultural complex in Samsung-dong, Seoul.

Set in a magical land, “School OZ” is a family-friendly fantasy adventure that combines hit songs by SM artists and magical creatures for a 110-minute show. The musical will follow the search for Dorothy, played by Red Velvet’s Seulgi, who suddenly disappears the day before an important competition looking for the greatest knight.

TVXQ’s Changmin will play the charming magician Oscar, SHINee’s Key will depict the mood maker David, while f(x)’s Luna will take on the role of witch Glinda. EXO members Suho and Xiumin will play the characters Hans and Aquila, respectively. To make the show even more special, Girls’ Generation‘s YoonA and Super Junior‘s Leeteuk will be making special appearances in the world’s first hologram musical.

SM will also hold the first screening of its hologram concert “Girl Story” starring Girls’ Generation’s YoonA and SHINee’s Minho on January 14.

The ticket sales for both performances will open on January 7 at 10 a.m., and tickets can be purchased through the application SMTOWN THEATRE as well as the shows’ official websites.

EXO's Chen and Suho to dance to girl group songs with Super Junior-M on 'Guesthouse'

Super Junior-M along with EXO's Suho and Chen will be showing off their stellar dance moves on the upcoming episode of 'Super Junior-M's Guesthouse'!

Before the guests on the episode were unveiled, Super Junior-M yelled out the names of girl groups and were excited to see female guests appear on the show. However, they could not hide their disappointment when it was revealed that it wasn't a girl group but rather EXO's Suho and Chen.

To soothe away their disappointment, Kyuhyun requested, "Can you at least do girl group dances?" prompting Suho to perfectly do the cat dance from AOA's "Like a Cat."

Eunhyuk said, "Can EXO's dancing machine Chen and Super Junior-M's dancing machine Ryeowook show EXID's dance?" The two obliged, trying EXID's "Up & Down," but they looked so awkward that everyone burst into laughter.
